Nooses found on gear of African American firefighters Last Update: 2/17/2006 3:41:22 PM
There is an uproar throughout the city of Jacksonville today after Jacksonville firefighters found nooses on their equipment Friday morning.
Now, the mayor and civil rights groups are speaking out. Friday morning, firefighters at fire station number four spotted two nooses wrapped around their equipment. They immediately called the city and investigators came out.
The nooses were found on gear used by two African American firefighters. They did not want to comment publicly, but the local president of the NAACP says it is a hurtful reminder of the struggles of the civil rights movement, and they want to determine who's responsible.
"Nooses should not be found in 2006. This is going back into slavery and if we're ever going to be a diverse community, these type of incidents are going to have to stop.”
The mayor's office sent out a press release about what happened today downtown which says the mayor is appalled at what's happened.
Later in an interview, Mayor Peyton said, “our goal is to bring these people to justice. We're going to do everything in our power to see that these people are brought to justice. Their actions are morally reprehensible."
The city of Jacksonville, under the leadership of the human rights commission and the city’s office of general counsel, will begin investigating the incident.
